Lion and Bull Relief

One of the most famous motifs found at Persepolis is the relief of a lion attacking a bull. Open to interpretation, this relief has been seen as symbolising the defeat of winter by the Spring Equinox; an interpretation supported by the fact that Persepolis was a major centre for the celebration of the New Year which took place in spring each year.
