In all the work that has taken place at ancient Ecbatana, no definitive structures dating to the Median or Achaemenid Periods have yet been located. We know from ancient sources such as Herodotus that this site must have contained a lavish palace, particularily in the Persian Period, but it has so far escaped detection. However, in the small site museum, Achaemenid Period column bases are displayed giving a hint that major structures from this period are yet to be found.
