Dating to the Hellenistic Period of Alexander the Great, the Stone Lion of Hamadan is the city's most famous monument. While it certainly dates to the Hellenistic Period, its original use is unclear. In Greece, similar monuments were raised to celebrate a victory and it could be that Hamadan's lion was ordered by Alexander, or one his successors, to celebtare the victory of the Greeks over the Persians. Romantics however say that it was ordered by Alexander to commemorate the death of his companiaon and lover, Hephaestion who died in the city after Alexander's return from the east.
