Also sharing the cliff face at Naqsh-i Rustam are a number of monumental reliefs carved by the later Sasanian rulers of Iran. The Sasanians who ruled Iran from the third century AD saw themselves as the inheritors of the Achaemenian Empire and to further this connection they had themselves depicted alongside the tombs of their ancestral heroes. In this photograph the Sasanian king, Shapur I (on left) accepts the 'ring of kingship' from the Zoroastrian god, Ahura Mazda. Under their horses' hooves lie Roman Emperors; recalling the fact that several Roman Emperors were taken prisoner by the Sasanians.
