In front of the Achaemenian tombs at Naqsh-i Rustam stands a Fire Temple in which the sacred fire of the Zoroastrian belief system would have burnt. Although not fire worshippers, the Zoroastrians believe in the cleansing power of fire and treat it with great reverence. In other areas of Iran, such as the city of Yazd, there are sacred fires that have been burning continuously for hundreds, some say, thousands of years.
