General view of Persepolis

The great Achaemenid ceremonial site of Persepolis is located in south-western Iran. Built by Darius, Xerxes and their successors, this vast palace complex shows the Perian Empire at its greatest. At the centre of the complex is the Apadana, or Audience Hall, seen here in this photograph. Some of the soaring columns which once supported the cedar-wood ceiling are still in place, although the site suffered terribly at the hands of Alexander the Great and his troops who burnt the building to the ground.
