The site of Ebla was protected by massive mud brick and stone fortification walls which surrounded the site. To give access to the city, four gates were constructed through these walls. The City Gate in this photograph has been recently excavated to reveal the massive basalt blocks lining the gateway. Not so clear, but discernable in the photograph, are rooms (two on each side) that lead off the gateway. In these rooms guards would have sheltered and people would have waited as they sought permission to enter the city. Beyond the gate is the lower city and the Tell of Ebla.
