The site of ancient Byblos was one of the more famous in the ancient world. From here the Greeks imported Egyptian papyrus and they gave the name 'Byblos' to the town based on the Greek word for papyrus (the same derivation that gives us the word 'bible' which was originally written on papyrus). To the locals it was Gubla and its citizens were close partners to the Egyptians for much of the Bronze Age. Extensive excavation has revealed occupation from the Chalcolithic Period (c. 4500 BC) through to the Crusader Period. The house in this photo is the original dig house of the French excavator Ernest Renan.
