The famous relief of Darius the Great can be seen in this photograph high up on the cliffs at Bisitun. Risking life and limb, Henry Rawlinson was lowered over the top of the cliff to record the inscriptions in 1836. Due to his efforts, linguists were able to decipher three ancient languages, Babylonian, Elamite and Old Persian. Like the Rosetta Stone, this inscription opened up a new world of study into the history of Iran. Below Darius' relief are more recent inscriptions dating from the Parthian and later periods.
