The well-preserved entrace to the palace at Ugarit is testament to the sudden destruction of the city around 1200 BC (by the so-called Sea-Peoples?) and the fact that the site was never re-occupied. This presents us with a snapshot of the city at its prime. Here a flight of shallow steps lead to the entrance portico that would have been flanked by two columns. While the wooden columns have vanished, the stone bases of the columns remain. This area would have been a waiting area for those entering the main part of the palace beyond.
