Archaeological Excavations on Tyre

For such an important Phoenician centre, there are very few Phoenician structures visible to a visitor to the site today. One reason is that the city continued to be important into the Classical Period as it maintained its control over the production of expensive purple dye extracted from the Murex shell. Due to the wealth of the city, lavish buildings were constructed on top of the Phoenician levels and in many cases this Classical building activity completely removed the earlier layers. In this photograph you see the centre of the archaeologivcal excavations on the former island of Tyre, although most of what you see here dates to the Roman and Byzantine Periods.
