Inner Court of Palace at Susa

Beside the Apadana in Darius' palace at Susa are several sunken courts that would have once contained gardens. This innovation to combat the high temperatures experienced at Susa (which is low lying on the Mesopotamian Plain), has been copied in hot climate gardens ever since.
