Water channels at Mari

Although close to the Euphrates River, Mari occupies a very dry zone which required all water to be carefully collected and stored. Across the site are many water channels (pictured) that would have fed water into underground cisterns. This collection of drinking water complemented the water systems that brought agricultural water from the Euphrates via irrigation canals, some many kilometres in length.
