The site of Mari has yielded temples, domestic quarters and the fabulous palace of Zimri-Lim; the final king of Mari prior to its destruction at the hands of the Babylonian king, Hamurabi, in 1750 BC. Due to the completeness of its destruction, and due to the fact that the site was never re-occupied, the palace is remarkably well-preserved. Now protected by a modern roof, the mud brick walls still stand 5-6 metres high. The walls were once covered with frescoes and the ancient sources confirm that this palace was the envy of kings from as far away as Ebla and Ugarit.
