The distinguishing feature of the temple at Ain Dara is the use of dense, black basalt stone to construct the temple's podium and columns. Although the upper portions of the columns have been damaged and weathered, the lower sections were buried until unearthed by a team of Japanese archaeologists. This is fortunate as the reliefs and decoration that surrounded the lower part of the temple are remarkably well-preserved. This photograph shows the entrance into the main part, or cella, of the temple.
